Comprehensive Guide to Audiobook Production

Comprehensive Guide to Audiobook Production

Congratulations on selecting a narrator! We'll outline the rest of the audiobook production process with Findaway Voices below.

Prefer to watch and listen to someone who's been through the Findaway Voices production process? Check out video at the bottom of this article.

1. Production Notes

Production notes are an important step of getting the performance you’re expecting. We’ve created a template to help guide the process, including places to note specific character traits, accents, and a pronunciation guide.

We’ll ask your narrator to start recording an extended sample of your book once they’ve received your notes. Production notes are not required, but are strongly recommended. You can upload your production notes directly on your project’s Audio page, where they’ll be made available to your narrator before they start recording.

2. Extended Sample Phase

Once the narrator has your production notes, they’ll start by recording an extended sample of your audiobook (usually around 15 minutes). Spending time reviewing this sample is crucial to ensuring your audiobook has the tone and style you want. This is the time for subjective notes (i.e. character voices, tone, accents, speed of narration etc.). Once you approve this, the narrator will record the entire book in the same style.

We’ll notify you via email when the extended sample of your audiobook is available to review online. At the same time, we’ll provide tips for how to help your narrator craft the perfect performance.

Now is the time to review and add feedback for the narrator using the Comment System (available on every audio file, described below) or approve the sample by clicking the teal Approve Sample button . If you provide feedback during the extended sample phase, you may also request a second recording of the extended sample with this feedback taken into account. Simply click the grey Request Second Sample button
Pro Tip: you may also use the second sample to hear character voices later in the manuscript, specific scenes etc.
Once you’ve approved the extended sample, the narrator will begin production of the full audiobook.  After this, tone, style, and accents are locked-in. Any changes must be made before this point.
Once you approve the extended sample, the narrator will record the entire book in the same style.

2.a Comment System

Each audio file uploaded to the Findaway Voices workflow contains a commenting system to chat back and fourth with the opposite party during the audiobook production process.

Once an audio file has been uploaded (either during the extended sample phase, or during production), simply look for the chat bubble icon: Each time a new comment is added, the opposite party will receive an email notification.

Important Note for Narrators: To save the previous comments on an audio file, be sure to use the icon when replacing the audio file with a new version. Otherwise, deleting the file using the trash can icon will remove all previous comments on that file.

3. Narrator Hits the Studio

As soon as the narrator receives approval on the extended sample, they'll begin work on recording the full performance.

At this point, there is nothing for the author/rights holder to do. Once the narrator has finished the full recording, they will submit the audiobook for your review and corrections. It doesn’t happen often, but occasionally there’s a mispronunciation or an extraneous sound that needs to be fixed to ensure your listeners get the best performance possible.
It's important to note that depending on narrator preference, they'll either submit the full audiobook once they've finished recording OR they will choose to add chapters as they finish them. Again, this is completely based on narrator preference.

4. Reviewing & Approving the Performance

You will receive an email notification from us after your narrator has finished the full recording and submitted the audiobook for your review. Now, you should be listening to a finished recording that is ready to publish and reach a world of listeners. Sometimes, though, small errors do occur, and now is the time that we’ll correct them. Authors/rights holders have a ten (10) day period to complete their review of the audiobook from the date the performance is submitted for review.

Please be sure to utilize our Guide for Reviewing your Full Audiobook as you listen.

Once you’ve reviewed the full audiobook and have worked through any corrections with your narrator, select “Submit Audio Files” at the bottom of the Audio page. This is your final approval, completing the production of your audiobook.

To complete the Approval of the audiobook production, you'll need to checkout online and pay for the performance by credit card. We accept all major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, American Express etc. We do not accept PayPal or Payment Plans at this time.
Important Note: Authors/rights holders have a ten (10) day period to complete their review of the audiobook from the date the performance is submitted for review.
Important Note: After you've completed payment, you still need to distribute your audiobook. You can do so by clicking the green Review & Submit button on your project overview page.
